REV. THAD HAYGOOD TO BE APPOINTED AS ST. LUKE’S NEW SENIOR PASTOR
On Sunday, April 25th , Bishop Lawson Bryan released the first of the projected pastoral appointments for coming year. Included on that list is the appointment of Rev. Thad Haygood to be the fifty-seventh Senior Pastor of St. Luke Church. In the 193 year history of St. Luke the list of pastors exceeds fifty-seven; however, in our first one hundred years, eight pastors were appointed to multiple, short tenures in the space of a decade (two were appointed three different times to serve St. Luke).
Thad currently serves as the Senior Pastor at Albany First United Methodist Church where he has served for the past five years. He is married to Laura Douglas Haygood, originally from Columbus. Thad and Laura were married in 2000 at St. Paul UMC here in Columbus. They have two daughters: Gentry who is a graduating high school senior and plans to attend Auburn University this fall, Ruth is 16 and will be a rising high school junior this fall. Thad’s father, Rev. David Haygood, served as an Associate Pastor of St. Luke from 1966-1970.
Thad graduated from Thomasville high school in 1990, Young Harris College in 1992, The University of Georgia in 1995, Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 1998. He has served as Music Director, Providence UMC 1995-1998, Associate Pastor of Albany First UMC 1998-2003, Pastor of Cuthbert UMC and Chaplain to Andrew College 2003-2007, Pastor of Crossroads UMC (Perry) 2007-2011, Senior Pastor of Dublin First UMC 2011-2016, and Senior Pastor of Albany First UMC 2016-present.
Thad’s appointment, like all the clergy appointments, will be confirmed by Bishop Bryan at the meeting of the South Georgia Annual Conference June 7. Moving day for all clergy with new appointments will be June 16, and Thad’s first Sunday at St. Luke will be Father’s Day, June 20.
I know that all of our Staff Parish Relations Committee enthusiastically embraces and celebrates this new appointment to St. Luke. Personally, I could not be more excited or grateful that Thad will appointed to this great church which has been such a blessing to Mary Pat and me. St. Luke will be in the best possible pastoral hands with Thad’s leadership, poised to move forward in new and joyful ways.
